A CURE FOR GRAVITY
SMOKE, LIES, AND THE NANNY STATE
Singer/songwriter/ Drew Barfield is an old friend of Joe Jackson, who produced the only album by Drew's band The Keys way back in 1981. Drew also contributed vocals to Joe's album BLAZE OF GLORY and co-wrote one song on LAUGHTER & LUST. Drew has also co-written, sang and played with Paul Young, Joan Armatrading, Level 42, Cathy Dennis, and others, and is currently a member, along with Paul Young, of the Tex-Mex band Los Pacaminos.
I learned a couple of days ago that Allison Cornell, one of my favourite touring companions, is no longer with us. It was not a complete surprise; she had been fighting cancer for a long time. And I do mean fighting. According to the doctors, she should have been gone at least a year ago.
The vodka martini has been a popular drink for quite a long time, and so has predictably fallen out of favour with the 'craft cocktail' crowd. Some very cool bars even refuse to stock vodka, on the grounds that it's pretty flavourless (they've got a point there) or that their customers need to be educated (hmmm). But personally I still find the 'vodkatini' a splendidly bracing apéritif, and not bad on other occasions, too.
